We are pleased to announce our first Mobile LAVA program for the year 2014, Mobile Ad-Tech: A Look Forward in 2014. For our January 16th program we have assembled a panel of experts who will share with us the state of digital advertising in the mobile space. Opening remarks by Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors."Many startups rely on advertising as a primary means to generate revenue for their mobile apps, websites, and consumer initiatives. However, porting the desktop banner ad model over to the smaller screen proved difficult if not impossible. Yet, innovative technologies, interactive paradigms, and ways of thinking about the mobile user are having a positive effect.

According to the Internet Advertising Bureau, mobile advertising increased 145% by the end of Q2 2013 to total $3.0 billion, up from $1.2 billion in the first six months of 2012.

Further evidence is exhibited by Facebook who seems be justifying its IPO share price based upon the company's ability to finally monetize its huge mobile audience. In fact, the New York Times reported in October 2013 that mobile ads accounted for 49% of its $1.8 billion in advertising revenue in Q3 2013.

Mike Vorhaus
President of Magid Advisors
Founder Frank N. Magid Associates' Internet practice in 1995 and Gaming practice in 2001

Mr. Vorhaus provides research and strategic consultation to a number of major traditional media companies, as well as many of the leading Internet and gaming companies. He also leads Magid's practice advising investment firms on media and technology assets.

Mike has been a columnist in Ad Age and is quoted in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, Reuters, etc. regularly and has appeared on CNBC. Mike worked in transfer of technology and fundraising at Caltech, UC Berkeley, and UC Santa Barbara. Mike also worked in two White Houses and the U.S. Congress. Mike graduated cum laude in Psychology/Sociology with a B.S. from Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

Mr. Vorhaus has also consulted on a number of film projects such as You've Got Mail and The Matrix.
In 2009 Mike appeared in the movie "Imagine That" starring Ed Murphy and is a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

Nate Redmond
Managing Partner, Rustic Canyon Partners

As managing partner of Rustic Canyon, Nate is responsible for leading the firm.

Nate is part of an extended family of entrepreneurs. Growing up in this environment instilled in him an appreciation for the process of creating and building great companies. He leans on experience as an investor, entrepreneur, and strategic advisor to work alongside extraordinary entrepreneurs. Nate has a keen interest in disruptive change to help emerging companies create breakthrough products and build value.

Before Rustic Canyon, Nate worked with Professor Clayton Christensen at the Harvard Business School and co-founded an Internet infrastructure company. Previously, Nate worked with the Boston Consulting Group, The Boeing Company and General Electric.

Nate enjoys mountains and oceans and all activities that involve being active with family in these venues.

Education: Nate earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and an MSE and BSE from The University of Michigan College of Engineering, where he was an Entrepreneurial Fellow in the Engineering Global Leadership Honors Program.


Eric Mugnier
Senior vice-president, M&C Saatchi Mobile

In 2006 Eric Mugnier joined the founding team of Inside Mobile, whose aim was to provide international brands mobile marketing solutions with a creative edge.

By 2010 Inside Mobile had managed to go above and beyond all expectations and in March 2010 part of the company was sold to M&C Saatchi and Inside Mobile was rebranded M&C Saatchi Mobile. Eric Mugnier has a vast marketing experience and has worked at numerous leading global brands over the last 9 years.

Eric has worked across all business areas at M&C Saatchi Mobile and has been able to use his extensive knowledge and experience to help drive the business forward, allowing it to become a market leader. In 2011 Eric moved to the US to open the first international office of M&C Saatchi Mobile.

Today Eric heads up M&C Saatchi Mobile in Americas, via two offices in New York and Los Angeles.

Andy Vogel

Former SVP of Digital and Mobile at Tribune Company

Andy is currently the President of Twin Bird Consulting. Twin Bird Consulting, Inc. specializes in assisting companies seeking to develop new revenue streams from digital and mobile platforms. Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Digital & Mobile for Tribune Company. He had responsibility for all digital, mobile, branded and converged media executions across the Tribune portfolio that includes 8 major daily newspapers including the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune and 23 broadcast television stations, including WGN America on national cable and KTLA.

Andy is a leader in developing revenue strategies for new and emerging businesses. He has held senior level business development, technology marketing and sales positions in the software, digital media, automotive retailing and newspaper industries. He created the first group online sales function for Gannett Company, and ran digital strategy and sales for Journal Communications and the paid subscription website (at the time the second largest paid subscriber base after ESPN Insider).

He has been on the Board of the Mobile Marketing Assoc., as well as serving on the Board of the IAB’s Mobile Center, and Google's Publisher Advisory Board.
