sociation (LAVA), in conjunction with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California are hosting a midday panelon January 15thto kick off the year for GreenLAVA. The panel will include representatives from funding sources including: venture capital, incubators, investment banks and debt finance.


Kurt Fuess, Director, CB Capital Partners (Investment Bankers)

Mr. Fuess is a Director for CB Capital Partners where he specializes in the areas of Aerospace and Defense. Mr. Fuess has significant work experience in institutional asset management, valuation, mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations and debt restructurings. Mr. Fuess has been involved in the creditor committees and the renegotiation of over $500 million worth of aircraft leases and has experience in aerospace, chemicals, defense, energy, healthcare, telecommunications and gaming industries.

Prior to joining CB Capital Partners, Mr. Fuess was a Senior Analyst at Summation Capital, an event-driven, special situations and distressed debt fund where he lead the firm's institutional asset management activities. Prior to that, he was an independent investment consultant identifying, researching and recommending investment ideas to clients for a leading East Coast asset manager. Prior to that, Mr. Fuess worked at Cypress Management Partnership, where he was an analyst and trader primarily working with distressed debt and post reorganization equities. Finally, Mr. Fuess worked at Gateway Partners a boutique merger and acquisition firm where he was an analyst focused on creating acquisition universes, industry matrix and recruiting CEOs, CFOs and COO for industry consolidations.

Mr. Fuess received a B.S. degree in Finance from San Diego State University, San Diego and an M.B.A degree in Finance from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

Jesse Torres, Regional Director, LA SBDC
As Regional Director of the Los Angeles Regional Small Business Development Center Network since 2011, JesseTorres oversees the budget and operations of the seventh largest federally-funded and the largest regionally-funded SBDC in the nation.Jesse previously served as Regional Director of the Santa Ana Regional Small Business Development Network, serving Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Under his leadership, the network helped to create more than 500 jobs and create $47.5 million in economic impact for the region.
Immediately prior to joining the LA-SBDC Network, Jesse was Director of Alumni Relations for the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University, which maintains the largest MBA network in the West. During his tenure, the alumni department established seven new alumni executive boards, including the school’s first Hispanic Alumni Council, and launched new programs such as the Fast Pitch Competition and Small Business Series.
Jesse is the author of Rise of Hispanic Business from 1980 to 1994 and a member of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.A Southern California native, Jesse has a BA in Psychology from the University of California Los Angeles and an MBA from the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University.
Stan Tomsic, Director, PortTechLA and Member, Pasadena Angels
As serial entrepreneur, Stan Tomsic's experience in the technology and green/clean tech industries spans over 25 years. He was founder and co-founder of several companies where he held management, executive and CEO positions. Stan was the administrator of the Business Technology Center of Los Angeles County, an accelerator incubator for high technology entrepreneurial companies. He is a partner of ACODA Technology & Investments, LLC, a firm specializing in strategic assistance, business consulting, investments and mergers and acquisitions for technology and services companies.
Stan is also a Pasadena Angel, serves as a member of the board of directors and advisors for several technology companies, and is a member of numerous professional organizations. He is chairman emeritus of the Executive Committee of the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum, co-founder and chairman of the Business Incubation Network of Southern California (BINS) and is LA Metro Director for Cleantech Open. Stan frequently presents and speaks on entrepreneurship, incubation and high tech start-ups.
Ian Gardner, Chief Strategy and Investment Officer, LACI

Ian Gardner brings a unique set of skills to LACI with entrepreneurial, management consulting, project development and investment banking experience. As an investment banker with Oracle Capital, LLC, Mr. Gardner specialized in financing solutions for cleantech companies (seed/early stage, development, growth, RTO, M&A, tech transfer to China/ India/ Africa). Client sectors included: solar (panel/ services/ development), small wind, energy storage, residential/commercial/municipal clean technology financing products, electric vehicle, battery management systems, EV charging networks, water treatment, LED, shale gas, smart grid, smart building, biomass, waste to energy, small hydro, and biofuels.Mr. Gardner also writesand produces the Finding Silence Project, a global hunt for the mystical secrets of the universe.
