There's no doubt about it:  Your start-up app or online service is killer!  You've got your first release live or in the App Store, your founding team is high-fiving, and you now wait with baited breath for them to come.  Makes sense, right?  You built it, they will come?

Not necessarily.  The next Mobile LAVA will explore the question, "What does it take to get users' eyeballs engaged and fingers tapping?"


All too often, start-up entrepreneurs have a tendency to over-focus on their fantastic new product or service to the detriment of a viable go-to-market strategy.  With over 1.5 million apps in Apple's App Store and 1.6 million available for Android, rising above the crowd to get noticed can be a daunting task.  For web-based services, the challenges for creating a consistent user base can be just as great in a sea of search results, content, and Cloud-based software.  For those creating an app-based or online marketplace, the task is—at least—doubled because there are two constituents—buyers and sellers—who each derive no value from your marketplace without the presence of the other.

So... What does it take to get users' eyeballs engaged and fingers tapping?  If creating a marketplace, should start-ups focus on attracting the buyers or the sellers first—the classic chicken or the egg conundrum?

  • What are the strategies for generating downloads from the app store and signups for a service?
  • Once you've got your users, how do you keep them engaged?  
  • What can be the costs for building a user-base?
  • What constitutes traction and a viable number of customers or users to justify your business?
